Professional Obedience Training
|
|
The primary objective of this course is to prepare students for a career in the field of professional obedience training for dogs. This instruction will qualify most graduates to begin their own training practices or to seek employment with an established dog training center. The Course focuses on obedience training and behavior problem solving. Diverse, in-depth units offer instruction detailing breed characteristics, puppy temperament testing, proper socialization, establishing a puppy pre-school class, training techniques and equipment, and general canine care. The Course begins with a study of the six fundamental canine personality types and the characteristics and temperament of over 100 different breeds of dogs. Students learn how to evaluate a dog's temperament and aptitude, and how to apply that knowledge in training. With the assistance of our staff of certified trainers, students learn to perfect techniques for on- and off-leash obedience. Because most undesirable dog behavior grows from a lack of communication between dog and owner, students learn to educate the owners in establishing a line of communication with their dog through proper handling. In addition to practicing customer relations, students will receive assistance in planning, opening and operating their own training business. In addition to dog obedience and counseling, students learn how to care for a healthy dog and gain the ability to recognize the most common communicable diseases and internal or external parasites which afflict dogs. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to evaluate both the dog's personality as well as the customer's needs, to formulate appropriate training programs to successfully train individual dogs and educate the owners in handling and modifying their dog's behavior. The following breakdown of units represents a combination of classroom lectures on theory, practical application of instruction in supervised workshops, and independent study sessions. |

Puppy Temperament Testing One of the most valuable skills that we teach students is how to temperament test puppies to find suitable matches for each puppy. Understanding the formula will allow not only a good match for each puppy but teltale signs that will allow us to better prepare puppies for life. We offer not only lectures, but hands on by use of exstensive video footage as well as some live class demonstrations. This subject will enable students to choose the best candidates for handicapped assistance work, police k-9's, or simply a puppy that is best suited for a small child. |
Puppy Pre-School Each year nearly 10 million dogs are given up by owners, killed on the roads, or euthanized due to behavior problems. This represents nearly 14 percent of the dogs annually. The main reason this happens is that these puppies were never socialized or taught how to fit into our domestic world. The fact is that the average new puppy owner, does not understand their role in raising a puppy. Most puppy owners just assume that since their dog is A.K.C. registered that it will turn out fine. Unfortunately a dog's registration means little when it comes to temperament and social skills. These cute little four legged friends need more than food and love. The objective of this class is to teach students how dogs learn and how we can influence and shape the behaviors in growing puppies. We then teach you how to set up and teach a puppy pre-school class. Students may participate in our weekly classes given to our local clientel allowing them the practical experience that they will need to start their own classes. This pre-school program is also designed to teach you how to help people solve problems such as chewing, playbiting, barking, housbreaking, health issues and more. |

The Master Trainer Course includes and expands upon the material covered in the Professional Obedience Course and covers a wide variety of civil-service uses for canine training, utilizing techniques for enhancing the dog's natural instincts of protection and scent discrimination. Students learn the proper, safe and effective methods to teach dogs to control these instincts and put them to use in civil settings to assist society. Controlled use of the protective instincts include teaching dogs to safely defend handlers and property, as well as Police K-9 functions such as drug detection, criminal apprehension, criminal transport, building search and suspect detention. Uses of a dog's natural scent discrimination abilities include: retrieving, tracking, search and rescue duties. Such advanced training leads into other civil service areas such as support dog work for the handicapped. While not every student may actively use this type of specialty training, the knowledge and experience has proven invaluable when the student becomes a professional trainer. These skills allow students to expand their horizons, giving them the much needed confidence to start their own business. The primary objective of this course is to prepare students for a career in almost any facet of professional dog training. This instruction will qualify most graduates to begin a multi-faceted training practice or to seek employment with many different types of training centers or related occupations. |
Personal Protection TrainingThe goal of Personal Protection Training is to teach high caliber breeds of dogs how to recognize a threat towards their owner or handler and refine a dog's natural protective instincts to provide a controlled defense for owners and their property against personal assault or burglary. Although some dogs do not readily show aggression, they do possess the ability to protect their owners and their owner's property. This form of training prepares the dog to defend his/her master on command by naturally enhancing the dog's suspicion level and building up their confidence. One of the greatest benefits in learning to train dogs in protection work is that the students thoroughly learn how to recognize the difference between real aggression and "bluff" or fear-type aggression. Students who are not certain they will train dogs for protection find this part of the Course greatly improves their ability to read and deal with all sorts of aggression problems during obedience training, regardless of the breed or size of dog.
